'The Spectacular Spider-man Animated Series' is the first ever spider-man show to feature Gwen Stacy (voiced by Lacey Chabert) as a cast regular.
During the opening credits, Spider-Man's picture is seen on the cover of the Daily Bugle, holding a criminal as he swings from a web. This is a tribute to the cover of 'Amazing Fantasy' #15, which featured the first appearance of Spider-Man.
Daran Norris reprises his role as the voice of J. Jonah Jameson on this cartoon series. Norris had previously provided the voice for Jameson in the 2000 "Spider-Man" video game for the Nintendo 64 and Playstation game systems.
Was originally intended to be a 65 episode series.
A third season was planned, however the series ended up being canceled due to the TV ratings for season 2, DVD sales not meeting their demand, and the TV show rights being reverted from Sony to Marvel. According to Greg Weisman had there been a third season, there would of been episodes that introduced the villains: Carnage, Hydro-Man, Scorpion, & Hobgoblin. While Norman Osborn's wife Emily Osborn would of made her appearance with Marina Sirtis in mind as the voice of the character.
In the first episode of the series, in Peter's biology class, the blackboard has the titles of the first three episodes written on it; Survival of the Fittest, Interactions and Natural Selection. Further, in the beginning season two, the biology teacher informs the students to remember what they'd studied during the semester and reads off "Survival of the Fittest, Natural Selection.." and is cut off as it transitions to the next scene.
Peter MacNicol provides the voice for Doctor Octopus on "The Spectacular Spider-Man". In real life, McNicol is a fan of the Spider-Man comics and Doctor Octopus is his favorite Spider-Man villain.
Dee Bradley Baker reprises his role as the voice of Dr. Curt Connors/the Lizard on this cartoon series. Baker had previously provided the voice of the Lizard in the 2000 "Spider-Man" video game for the Nintendo 64 and Playstation game consoles, and was the voice for Dr. Curt Connors in the 2001 Playstation sequel game "Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro".
This is the first Spider-Man animated series to include the villain Flint Marko/the Sandman since the third season of the 'Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends' cartoon in 1983.
This is, to date, the only Spider-Man animated series to feature Flint Marko/the Sandman in multiple episodes. The character has never appeared in more than one episode in any previous Spider-Man, or Marvel, animated series.
Edward Asner (Uncle Ben Parker) previously supplied the voice of J. Jonah Jameson, the editor of the Daily Bugle, in Spider-Man (1994).
