Huai River

Zhoulai (Chinese: 州來) was a small state of the Spring and Autumn period that ruled a crucial part of the middle Huai River valley. Its capital, known by the same name, was located in modern-day Fengtai County in Huainan. Due to its strategic location, Zhoulai controlled the most important route from Hubei to the Yellow Sea. This made it a target of the expansionist state of Chu, which subjugated Zhoulai in the late 7th century BC in order to gain access to the east. While nominally allowed to maintain autonomy under its own dynasty, Zhoulai effectively became a puppet state under Chu military occupation and civil administration. It survived in this condition until 529 BC, when its capital city was conquered by Wu and its ruling family was formally deposed.

Shaobo Lake (Chinese: 邵伯湖; pinyin: Shàobó Hú) is a freshwater lake in Jiangsu Province, China, it is located between Gaoyou and Yangzhou. Shaobo Lake is a part of the Huai River system as the Huai River flows south through Shaobo Lake on its way to the Yangtze River like Gaoyou Lake. It is about 17 km long and 6 km wide, covering approximately 77 km.

Hui River (also pronounced as Kuai River), traditionally known as Huan River or Baohui River, was a major tributary of Huai River in northern China. Currently, it flows into the Huai-Hong New Canal, a constructed flood control waterway connecting Huaiyuan and Hongze Lake. The starting point of Hui River is the ancient Honggou Canal (鸿沟), which has a great historical significance because it was the border between territories controlled by Liu Bang and Xiang Yu during the Chu-Han Contention (206 - 202 BCE). The river is mainly recharged by rainwater and groundwater. The river is heavily polluted by wastewater from nearby towns.

Gaoyou Lake (Chinese: 高邮湖; pinyin: Gāoyòu Hú) is the sixth largest freshwater lake in China, it is located between Anhui Province and Jiangsu Province. In a sense Gaoyou Lake is a manmade lake, and its creation is part of a long story about flood control and hydraulic engineering in ancient China. Gaoyou Lake is now part of the Huai River system as the Huai River flows south through Gaoyou Lake on its way to the Yangtze River and the Pacific. It is about 39 kilometres (24 mi) long and 30 kilometres (19 mi) wide, covering approximately 674.7 square kilometres (300 sq mi).

The Huai River, formerly romanized as the Hwai, is a major river in East China, about 1,110 km (690 mi) long with a drainage area of 174,000 km (67,000 sq mi). It is located about midway between the Yellow River and Yangtze River, the two longest rivers and largest drainage basins in China. Historically draining eastwards directly into the Yellow Sea, erosion from floods have changed the course of the river such that it now primarily discharges into the Yangtze. The Huai River is, to this day, notoriously vulnerable to flooding.

Jianghuai (江淮; pinyin: Jiānghuái) is a geographical area in China referring to the plain between the area north of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and near the lower reaches of the Huai River Basin, especially in northern Jiangsu, northern and central Anhui.

The North Jiangsu Main Irrigation Canal (simplified Chinese: 苏北灌溉总渠; traditional Chinese: 蘇北灌溉總渠; pinyin: Sūběi Guàngài Zǒng Qú) (often called the Subei Canal) is located in the lower reaches of the Huai River, one of the major rivers in the north of Jiangsu Province, China. It originates at Gaoliangjian on Hongze Lake and runs through Hongze, Qingpu, Huai'an, Funing, Sheyang and Binghai county(or district) and joins the artificial estuary of Biandan Harbour. The canal is 168 km in length and can irrigate 1,720,000 hectares of farmland. The construction program was organized and directed by the headquarters of the Jiangsu Huai River management program between October 1951 and May 1952.

Huai River Water Resources Commission (HRWC) is a government agency of Ministry of Water Resources of the People's Republic of China. HRWC takes responsibility of water administration of the Huai River basin which covers some parts of Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong and Hubei provinces. The head office is in Bengbu City.
