Tom Cruise is now older in real life than Tom Skerritt's Viper was in the original Top Gun (1986).


It was rumored that the plot would be centered around drone warfare before Tom Cruise confirmed this sequel would be going back to fighter jets. Drones will still serve some point of the film's plot, however.


Will reportedly involve unmanned aerial vehicles and will depict "an end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots," as the world's powers make the switch to remotely flown, computer aided drones.

Miles Teller was cast in the role of Goose's son beating out the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. All three were flown to the home of Tom Cruise, the star of this movie, for chemistry tests. Powell was later cast in this movie in a role beefed up for him, having impressed Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as executives at Paramount Pictures and Skydance with his auditions.
