Elisabeth Moss dropped out of their movie to star in Taika Watiti's Film "Next Goal Wins" while Paul Dano dropped out to star as The Riddler in Matt Reeves film "The Batman"

Jane Campion had long been a fan of Kirsten Dunst and had attempted to work with her on a prior project before this one. Dunst revealed that Campion wrote her a letter around 2001 that she has kept in her possession.

Elisabeth Moss was originally cast in the role of Rose, in what would've been her third collaboration with Jane Campion following the two separate Top of the Lake miniseries iterations. She was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and Kirsten Dunst was cast.

Paul Dano was originally cast as George Burbank but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with The Batman (2022). Dano tried to work out the schedule but in the end, wasn't able. Jesse Plemons replaced him.
