Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello first met in 2014 when Camila’s former group Fifth Harmony was on tour, opening for Austin Mahone, which formerly dated Camila.
Camila and Shawn recalled their first impressions of each other in an interview with V Magazine.“I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar,” Camila said.
“Yeah, that was me. I didn’t talk to anybody,” Shawn remembered. “You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me. Actually, I think if we go into our DMs or something, there’s a photo from the day we met, I think.”
Shawn helped Camila transition out of Fifth Harmony and into a solo act with their first collab “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” released in November 2015, which is what initially got fans to start shipping the two.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Shawn and Camila discussed writing the song together after they saw each other backstage at a Taylor Swift Concert, when Shawn was her opening act. “That was the first time we had ever really spent more than a few minutes talking to each other,” she said.
“We were just backstage hanging out,” Shawn said about the encounter. “I pulled out my guitar and we were just messing around, not really thinking about writing a song.”
After “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was released, dating rumors started but those were denied by Shawn and Camila, who claimed to be friends only.
In April 2018, Shawn goes on Beats 1 and talks with Zane Low about Camila, calling her his “favorite person in the whole world.”
“I don’t think you’ll ever meet somebody who can feel emotion like her, in all aspects,” he continued. “She can feel hurt like no other, but she can feel love like no other and it’s really amazing.”
In December 2018, collaboration rumors soared after Camila posted a photo of her and Shawn sitting on the floor with a guitar. “Canadian fury + Latin sass,” she wrote on Twitter.
Even before they were suspected to be romantically involved, Shawn and Camila were each other’s biggest supporters. Following the 2019 Grammys where they both received their first nominations and performed on the award stage for the first time, the singers took to social media to congratulate one another.
“Every time I’m blown away with you and your performance and love for what you do,” Shawn wrote alongside a picture of the pair backstage. “So proud of us Camilita !! X”
Camila shared the same picture on Instagram, captioning hers, “So proud of this amazing human !!!!!! Seems like yesterday we were just kids singing Ed Sheeran songs in the dressing room, now we’re kids trying not to throw up cause we’re at the Grammys!!!! I love you forever.”
In June 2019, Shawn and Camila’s second collaboration, “Señorita.” was released. Following the release of their steamy new song, all eyes were on Shawn and Camila over the Fourth of July weekend, and the two didn’t hold back. They were spotted together multiple times, holding hands, getting flirty, and even kissing.
Just two weeks after their Independence Day rendezvous, Shawn and Camila were spotted out together again, this time in San Francisco, locking lips on both occasions.
Shortly after, a source told E! News that the two have become inseparable and their relationship is “all out at this point.”
Obviously, fans were getting pretty curious as to what exactly has been going on between Shawn and Camila. So, one fan took the opportunity of a Q&A with Shawn to ask him about it. Shawn smiled before immediately moving on to the next question.
Shawn and Camila had their steamiest encounter yet in a pool in Miami as the two enjoyed a swim together, and locking lips intermittently. Even when they emerged from the water, the pair couldn’t detach, and they walked hand in hand, looking cute as ever. Later that night, Camila headed out to Shawn’s Miami tour stop, bringing her family along with her. Camila seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself as she danced along to her rumored boyfriend’s set.
In September 2019, during an interview to ELLE Magazine, Camila was asked about “Shawmila” rumors, which she replied by saying, “I don’t know; people can say whatever they want to say. They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching. That is how I want to live. I never want to open the door for people to feel like they are involved. Like I said, I want it to be mine and [his]. That’s why I’m so tight-lipped about it: because I want to protect it.”
Camila also talked about working with Shawn on the song “Señorita”: “I mean, I love him. We have always connected; we have the best time together. Shawn texted me the idea for the chorus for “Señorita.” He was like, “Hey, what if we work on this and do it together?” I was on the Taylor Swift tour and hadn’t been in the studio for a while. I didn’t want to do it, and then a few months later, I couldn’t get the song out of my head. I [finally] told him, “I think we should do this.” He was like, “I don’t want to do it anymore.” It went back and forth for, like, eight months. Then we finally went into the studio and reworked it so we both felt good about it, without any pressure. I love working with him so much.”
