Trivia (7)

Notoriously shy and reclusive, during the height of his fame in the 1960s, he was frequently mobbed by hordes of infatuated teenage girls, akin to the level of hysteria The Beatles had endured.

Produced the British band, Pulp's album, "We Love Life", in 2001.

Was a member of the 1960s singing group, The Walker Brothers, along with John Maus and Gary Leeds.

Recorded a single in 1972 which consisted of "This Way Mary" and "The Me I Never Knew", both songs written by John Barry & Don Black. They related to the films: Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972), respectively.

Moved to England in 1965 with fellow The Walker Brothers and achieved immense success, notching up two Number 1's in the UK with "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", before the group disbanded in 1967.

Released several critically acclaimed solo albums in the 1960s. His music was marked for its lush orchestral arrangements, his baritone voice, and his lyrics that tackled themes such as socialism, death, madness and unrequited love.

David Bowie was a great admirer of his work.

Personal Quotes (3)

[in 1967] I live the life of a recluse not out of choice or any mistaken notion that I am creating an image or sympathy for myself, but because this is the way I am.

[in 1968] I don't smoke. Clubs bore me stiff and food is something to eat and not to celebrate over.

[in 1968] When they throw me out on to a TV set or a stage it's like puttin' a hermit who has lived all his life in isolation suddenly in the middle of Times Square.
