Arsène Lupin is a character created by French novelist and short story writer, Maurice Leblanc, in 1905.
Lupin is not a story about the gentelman thief Arsene Lupin from the novels. The Netflix series is about a Senegalese immigrant to France named Assane Diop who idolizes the Lupin character from the books. He becomes a master thief and a master of disguise, whose skills rival those of the Lupin literary character. He uses his skills to right a wrong.
Like his character on the show, star Omar Sy's father came from Senegal.
The show is in no way related to the famous Lupin The 3rd Japanese anime, but in the last episode of part 2 there are many references to it. 1) when Philippe Courbet is recruited, his hairstyle reminds of Ishikawa Goemon's 2) throughout the series, Benjamin's hairdo is similar to Daisuke Jigen's 3) the car used to escape (Benjamin's car) is an old yellow FIAT 500, always used in the anime by the gang.
