It has been confirmed that the animated Lizzie will be returning, out-of-continuity animation displaying her thoughts and emotions. This makes chances quite big that the iconic theme song will also be returning.
At present (March 2020) two episodes have been filmed. There were plans to film more episodes until production was (temporarily) halted.
Taping began October 29th 2019 in New York.
While the first episode was filmed in New York, further episodes will be filmed in Los Angeles, as the start of the series Lizzie lives in Brooklyn after which she moves back to LA.
Jake Thomas has posted a picture on Instagram showing a scene resembling the original opening. This means it is very likely that the opening will also return.
According to the most recent news the cast, crew and distributor want a family friendly concept while conserving the idea of growing with the original audience. The idea of a childrens show with adult subjects reminizes of the show Shinchan (1992) which is hugely popular worldwide.
Hilary Duff shared her hopes that the show would be moved from Disney+ to Hulu so "the realities" of her character's "journey" in her 30s "wouldn't live under the ceiling of a PG rating."
After the show filmed its first two episodes, creator and showrunner Terri Minsky abruptly left the project due to creative differences and production was halted.
As of 16/12/2020 the Lizzie reboot had been cancelled. Confirmed in a statement Hilary Duff posted on instagram, "sadly and despite everyone's best efforts, it isn't going to happen". Duff expressed that she would want "any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today" but a reboot that "wasn't done right, wouldn't be worth doing".
