Ran for re-election to Congress in 2000, but lost to Mel Carnahan, the then-governor of Missouri, despite the fact that his opponent was already deceased. Carnahan's widow Jean was appointed to his seat.


Is of Norwegian descent on his mother's side, and visited his relatives in Norway as late as of 2003. When there he pushed politics aside, played the piano and sang a hymn at his family reunion in the local church (outside Bergen, Norway).
