When Leonard Cohen met Georgianna, her surname was Sherman.
Georgianna Orsini, in the ....Times obiturary, is familiar to Cohen fans as Anne Sherman. Lover in NYC, met at International House at Columbia, featured in Favorite Game, and poems.
Leonard called her Anne or Annie. In 1957 Leonard took Annie to Quebec to meet friend and family. The biography "I'm Your Man: the Life of Leonard Cohen" by Sylvie Simmons discusses the relationship and notes that Aviva Layton described Annie as Leonard's first great love." Although the end of the relationship was initiated by Cohen, both found the breakup painful. Eventually, Georgianna married Count Orsini the owner of Orsini's, a famous New York City restaurant.
In 2002, Georgianna Orsini published a book of poetry with her own illustrations called "An Imperfect Lover."
“Orsini has chosen an apt title for her books,”observes Robert Phillips in his foreword to the book, “because the world of her imagination contains much imperfection—imperfect family life,...imperfect marriages, imperfect health.” As a poet, Orsini is unsentimental and precise. As an illustrator she is both whimsical and ironic. In both media, she is unflinching in her vision of the redemptive powers of art.
GEORGIANNA ORSINI, née Sherman, was born in Albany, New York. She attended Wellesley College and Harvard University, and received her B.A. degree from Columbia University, during which time she worked as a Program Coordinator at International House. She has lived in Tuscany and New York. Her gardens have been featured in House and Garden, House Beautiful and American Women’s Garden. At present she lives in the mountains of North Carolina.
