The name of this film came from a quote from the court judge on Bundy's trial. He quoted, "The crimes were extremely wicked, shockingly evil, vile, and the product of design to inflict a high degree of pain."


The film premiered on 26 January 2019 at the Sundance festival in Utah, coincidentally the state with many of Bundy's murders. The Sundance film festival starts on 24 January 2019, exactly 30 years to the day since Bundy's execution via electric chair in Florida.


There was once a petition in 2016 from fans to cast Zac Efron as Ted Bundy in the upcoming biography movie. Former lawyer of Ted Bundy agrees that Efron actually bears a resemblance to the serial killer.


Acting debut of Metallica frontman James Hetfield. Director Joe Berlinger had previously worked with Hetfield and his band on the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004).


Filming was carried out at Clermont County Jail near Cincinnati, Ohio in January 2018.


The courtroom scenes were filmed at the U.S. Post Office in Covington, Kentucky which was formerly the home of the U.S. District Court


he diner scene was filmed in Newport Ky at "The Pepper Pod Restaurant" a local eatery that has been in business since 1956 and is still owned by the same family.


At the time there were many people that could not believe Ted did those things. He made many friends in Salt Lake that followed the trial closely. Most only heard the evidence allowed in the trial. The whole experience deeply disturbed many people for years.

The University of Washington Law School law library scenes were filmed in Northern Kentucky University's Salmon P. Chase College of Law in Highland Heights, Kentucky on February 17, 2018.


Some of the jail and prison scenes were filmed at the Clermont County Jail and Lebanon Correctional in Southwest Ohio, as well as Williamstown in Northern Kentucky.
