Dame Emma Thompson, DBE (born 15 April 1959) is a British actress, screenwriter, activist, author and comedienne. She is known for her portrayals of enigmatic women, often in period dramas and literary adaptations, and playing matronly characters with a sense of wit. She is one of Britain's most acclaimed actresses.
