It is a left tributary of the Kuban, which it joins in the Krasnodar Reservoir. The river is 265 kilometres (165 mi) long, with a drainage basin of 5,990 square kilometres (2,310 sq mi). It has its sources at the main watershed of the Caucasus Mountains. In its upper reaches it is a typical mountain river, and flows through deep canyons, while in its lower parts it is a slow flowing lowland river.

At its confluence with the Great Yenisey in Kyzyl (Tuva), the Yenisey is formed. It is 563 kilometres (350 mi) long, and has a drainage basin of 58,700 square kilometres (22,700 sq mi). It rises as the Shishged Gol in the Darkhad Valley in northwestern Khövsgöl aimag in Mongolia.

The Pizhma freezes up in mid-November and stays icebound until the second half of April. The Pizhma is navigable within 144 km of its estuary. The Nemda is a right tributary of the Pizhma.

The length of the river is 38 kilometres (24 mi), 20 kilometres (12 mi) of which is in Moscow itself. Its basin has an area of 190 square kilometres (73 sq mi). The Setun originates in the village of Salariyevo in Moscow Oblast and flows into the Moskva near Krasnoluzhsky Road Bridge, opposite to the former village of Luzhniki. The river teems with roach, European perch, crucian carp, pike, and other fish, but is of no value to the fishing industry due to pollution with toxic waste.
