Chugoku Electric Power Rugby Football Club – nicknamed the Red Regulions – are a Japanese rugby union team, currently playing in the county's second tier Top Challenge League competition. The team is the rugby team of electric utilities provider Chugoku Electric Power, based in Hiroshima in the Chūgoku region.

Hino Motors Red Dolphins are a Japanese rugby union team, currently playing in the county's second tier Top Challenge League competition. The team is the rugby team of car manufacturer Hino Motors, based in Hino in the Tokyo Metropolis.

The Sunwolves (Japanese: サンウルブズ) are a professional rugby union team and is Japan's representative team in SANZAR's international Super Rugby competition. The team is based in Tokyo, Japan, but will also play some home matches in Singapore. They will make their debut in Super Rugby in 2016.

Kintetsu Liners rugby team are a Japanese rugby union team owned by Kintetsu Corporation which was founded in 1929. They have won the All-Japan Championship three times as an amateur team. Their home is at Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Higashiosaka, Japan, which was also opened in 1929.

Yokogawa Musashino Atlastars is a Japanese rugby union team based in Musashino, Tokyo. They won promotion to the Top League for one season in 2008–09 being relegated that same season.

Suntory Sungoliath (also known as Suntory Rugby Football Club) is owned by the Suntory beverage company and is one of the Japanese rugby union teams in the Top League. The team is based in Fuchū, Tokyo, as is their local rival Toshiba Brave Lupus.

Secom Rugguts is a Japanese rugby union team which was in the Top League for the first season of the league but was demoted at the end of the season. As the top team of the Top East league and by then coming second after Fukuoka Sanix Bombs in the three-way Top League Challenge Series, Secom managed to get back into the Top League for the 2005-6 season but was relegated again in 2006-7.

Munakata Sanix Blues (宗像サニックスブルース, Munakata Sanikkusu Burūsu), formerly Fukuoka Sanix Blues and Fukuoka Sanix Bombs, is a Japanese rugby union team based in Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Founded in April 1994 (Heisei 6), the team rose rapidly through the Kyūshū leagues and was in the Top League for the first season (2003-4) as Kyūshū's sole representative, but lost a relegation battle with Kintetsu Liners 42-45 and was demoted. But Sanix managed to return to the Top League for the 2005-6 season, beating Secom Rugguts and Toyota Jido Shokki in the Top League Challenge Series 2005.

Akita Northern Bullets are a Japanese rugby union team that play in the Top East League. The team is based in Akita, Akita, Japan. In 1958, the Akita City Government created a rugby union team. The new Bullets team was formed in 2004, and allocated to the Top North League. As of 2017, the club is in the Top East Division 1, the third-highest level of rugby competition in the country

The Japan national rugby union team (often known as the Cherry Blossoms, Sakura, and, more recently, The Brave Blossoms), is traditionally the strongest rugby union power in Asia and has enjoyed and endured mixed results against non-Asian teams over the years. Rugby union in Japan is administered by the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU), which was founded in 1926. They compete annually in the Pacific Nations Cup and previously in the Asia Rugby Championship. They have also participated in every Rugby World Cup since the tournament began in 1987.
