    Queens of the Stone Age is the self-titled debut album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Following the collapse of negotiations with Roadrunner Records, the album was released on September 22, 1998 on Loosegroove Records, operated by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard. The album was primarily written and recorded by founding member Josh Homme and former Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernández, and features a riff-oriented songwriting style that Homme subsequently dubbed "robot rock". Regarding this aesthetic, Homme stated, "I just wanted to start a band that within three seconds of listening, people knew what band it was."

The album has been certified gold in the UK, where it has sold over 100,000 units. It is also the band's first album to be released after Nick Oliveri was fired from the band. Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan are the only members from the previous album, Songs for the Deaf, to play on this album and it's the first album to feature drummer Joey Castillo and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen.

Rated R was a critical and commercial success and became the band's breakthrough album. It peaked at number 16 on the Top Heatseekers and reached high positions on charts worldwide. The album has been certified gold in the United Kingdom. Three singles were released from it: "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret", "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" and "Monsters in the Parasol", with the first helping Queens of the Stone Age reach mainstream popularity.

Over the Years and Through the Woods is sold as two different packages: either a CD case or a DVD case; both versions include the same content on the discs. The cover art includes an assortment of stylized letter Q's, which the band has used on the covers of previous studio albums (specifically, the blue Q is from Rated R, the red Q is from Songs for the Deaf, and the yellow Q from Lullabies to Paralyze). The title font on the cover was taken from their self-titled album. The DVD content was directed by Chapman Baehler.

The first single, "The Way You Used to Do", was released the following day along with the announcement of a world tour.
