Ramón Emeterio Betances y Alacán (April 8, 1827 – September 16, 1898) was a Puerto Rican independence advocate and medical doctor. He was the primary instigator of the Grito de Lares revolution and is considered to be the father of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Since the Grito galvanized a burgeoning nationalist movement among Puerto Ricans, Betances is also considered "El Padre de la Patria" (Father of the [Puerto Rican] Nation). Because of his charitable deeds for people in need, he also became known as "El Padre de los Pobres" ("The Father of the Poor").

Ramón Marín Solá (12 January 1832 – 13 September 1902) was a nineteenth-century Puerto Rican educator, journalist, politician, historian, poet, and playwright. He is best remembered for his 1875 historical masterpiece, "Las fiestas populares de Ponce."

Santiago Rosendo Palmer Irizarry (February 25, 1844 – March 31, 1906) was a prominent Puerto Rican writer and politician.

Tomás López de Victoria (1911–????) was a political activist and the Sub-Commander of the Cadets of the Republic. These cadets were the official youth organization within the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. They were also known as the Ejército Libertador de Puerto Rico (The Liberation Army of Puerto Rico).

Jaime Leopoldo Drew Henriquez (16 September 1876 – 14 April 1948) was an early twentieth-century Puerto Rican educator, civil servant, writer and engineer from Ponce, Puerto Rico.
