    Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Haitian Creole: Jan-Jak Desalin; 20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution. Under Dessalines, Haiti became the first country to permanently abolish slavery. Initially regarded as governor-general, Dessalines was later named Emperor of Haiti as Jacques I (1804–1806) by generals of the Haitian Revolution Army and ruled in that capacity until being assassinated in 1806. He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Haiti.

Final official results had shown him as the selected winner of the November 2016 election. In 2019, political unrest and calls for his resignation became a crisis.

    Guy Malary (10 June 1943 – October 14, 1993) was a Justice Minister of Haiti, appointed by Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991 and continuing in office under the post-1991 Haitian coup d'état regime. He was killed in an ambush along with his bodyguards. "According to the petitioners [to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights], in the course of carrying out his duties, Mr. Malary worked for the implementation of the Governor's Island Accord, advocating the creation of an independent police force and carrying out a comprehensive review of the judicial system of Haiti, which brought him into direct conflict with the authorities in the country at the time."

    Jacques Roche (21, July, 1961– 14, July, 2005), a Haitian journalist and editor for Le Matin newspaper and a host of a TV show in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was kidnapped, tortured and killed during a wave of abductions carried out before elections. Roche was affiliated with Group of 184 and an opponent of Jean-Bertrand Aristide and his Fanmi Lavalas political party and pro-Lavalas were suspected of carrying out his murder.

    Jean Léopold Dominique (July 31, 1930 – April 3, 2000) was a Haitian journalist and pro-democracy activist. His station, Radio Haiti-Inter, was the first to broadcast news, investigative reporting, and political analysis in Haitian Creole, the language spoken by all Haitian people. He was assassinated on April 3, 2000, a crime for which the intellectual authors have been neither officially identified nor prosecuted.
