Newton Knight (November 1837 – February 16, 1922) was an American farmer, soldier and Southern Unionist, best known as the leader of the Knight Company, a band of Confederate Army deserters that turned against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Local legends state that Knight and his men attempted to form the "Free State of Jones" in the area around Jones County, Mississippi, at the height of the war.

Christopher Brian McDaniel (born June 28, 1971) is an American attorney, talk radio host, and Republican Party politician who has served in the Mississippi State Senate since 2008. McDaniel was a candidate for United States Senate in 2014, but narrowly lost the Republican nomination to incumbent senator Thad Cochran in a runoff election.

Luke McDaniel (February 3, 1927 – June 27, 1992), who also recorded under the stage name Jeff Daniels, was an American country and rockabilly music singer and songwriter. He was the grandfather of Mississippi state senator Chris McDaniel.

Lavern Jack Pierce (June 2, 1949 – September 13, 2012) was a professional baseball player. Pierce played in parts of three seasons in the majors from 1973 until 1975 with the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. He also played with the Nankai Hawks in Japan in 1977. However, Pierce is better known for his exploits in minor league baseball. As of 1998, he ranked ninth all-time in minor league home runs with 395.
