It shows the conversion of Lithuania (then a Grand Duchy) to Christianity and the baptism of the Boyar princes and people before the temple of the pagan god Perkūnas on Holy Saturday 1387. It forms part of the artist's series The History of Civilisation in Poland.

    Astronomer Copernicus, or Conversations with God (Polish: Astronom Kopernik, czyli rozmowa z Bogiem) is a painting by the Polish artist Jan Matejko completed in 1873, in the collection of the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. It depicts Nicolaus Copernicus observing the heavens from a balcony in a tower with the cathedral in Frombork in the background. The canvas was purchased from a private owner by public subscription in Poland and hangs in the aula (Great Hall) of the Collegium Novum of the university. Matejko produced the painting as part of a series of paintings intended to capture and represent key moments in the history of Poland to inspire the public.

    Twardowski conjuring up the spirit of Barbara before Sigismund August is a sketch for an unrealized painting by Jan Matejko. Executed on a board measuring 26 × 40 cm, signed with initials on the lower right side: JM. Created in the manor in Krzesławice and transported to Cracow on October 9, 1884, as one of four elaborated historical sketches: Kordecki on the walls of Częstochowa begging for divine help, Bolesław Chrobry at the Golden Gate in Kiev, Bishop Krasiński at the death of Sigismund August, and the mentioned Twardowski invoking the spirit of Barbara before Sigismund August, remaining in this form to this day. It is currently held in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw.
