The Nets finished 22-44, last in the Atlantic Division and 12th overall in the Eastern Conference and failed to make the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season. Point guard Deron Williams led the team in scoring (21.0), assists (8.7), and minutes per game (36.3) and was the team's lone selection in the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. Forward Kris Humphries led the team with 11.0 rebounds and 1.19 blocks per game and games played (62).

    The 2003-04 NBA season was the Nets' 28th season in the NBA. The team acquired All-Star center and two time Defensive Player of the Year Alonzo Mourning. Things got worse during the season as head coach Byron Scott was fired and was replaced by interim head coach Lawrence Frank and newly acquired Mourning retired in late November due to lingering kidney issues and underwent surgery for a kidney transplant. Nevertheless, the Nets repeated as Atlantic Division Champions for the third straight season, earning them the number 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, the Nets easily disposed of the New York Knicks in the first round but lost in seven games in the next round to the eventual NBA champions, the defensive minded Detroit Pistons.

    The 2000–01 NBA season was the Nets' 25th season in the NBA. The Nets' ended the season with a record of 26–56, worse than last season's record of 31–51. Their first game was at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 31, 2000. The Nets lost 82–86. Their first win was an away game three days later against the Chicago Bulls. The score was 92–82. The Nets last game was at home against the same team. New Jersey lost 94–100. For the third year in a row the Nets did not make the playoffs after finishing 6th in the NBA Atlantic Division. Point guard Stephon Marbury was selected for the 2001 NBA All-Star Game. Shooting guard Kerry Kittles injured his knee and was out for the entire season.
