Malaysian space program

Dato' Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie bin Sheikh Mustapha (born 27 July 1972) is a Malaysian orthopaedic surgeon and the first Malaysian astronaut. He launched to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-11 with the Expedition 16 crew on 10 October 2007. Sheikh Muszaphar flew under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program, and returned to Earth on 21 October 2007, aboard Soyuz TMA-10 with the Expedition 15 crew members, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov.

The Langkawi National Observatory or Balai Cerap Kebangsaan Langkawi is a space observatory in Malaysia, founded in 2006. This observatory is located at Langkawi Island, Kedah and is managed by the Malaysian National Space Agency (ANGKASA) (now Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA)).

The Malaysian Space Agency (Malay: Agensi Angkasa Malaysia), abbreviated MYSA, is the national space agency of Malaysia. On 20 February 2019, the Malaysian Cabinet had approved the establishment of MYSA through the merging of Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency (MRSA) and National Space Agency (ANGKASA).

Borneo SubOrbitals was a public-private spaceflight venture created in 2019. In 2022, the project was replaced by SPACE (Sarawak Physics, Astronomy & Computer Engineering) educational programme in collaboration with MEASAT Satellite Systems which allows students to launch rockets in virtual reality.

The SME Aerospace Sdn Bhd (SMEA), is a Malaysian defence company in aerospace section that specialises in the manufacturing of aircraft and its parts. The company is located in Sungai Buloh, Selangor and it is a subsidiary company of National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd.

The Angkasawan program was an initiative by the Malaysian government to send a Malaysian to the International Space Station on board Soyuz TMA-11. The program was named after the Malay word for astronaut, Angkasawan. It resulted in Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor becoming the first Malaysian in space on 10 October 2007.

MEASAT-3b is a communications satellite which MEASAT Satellite Systems operates in geosynchronous orbit at 91.5 degrees east longitude, co-located with MEASAT-3 and MEASAT-3a, with orbital period of 1436.1 minutes and orbital speed of ~3.08 km/s (~1.914 mi/s). It was built by Astrium (now Airbus Defence and Space), based on the Eurostar spacecraft platform, with an investment of approximately MYR1.25bn ($370m), and the 5th MEASAT satellite in orbit. Its weigh 5,897 kilograms at liftoff and is 6.6 by 2.8 by 2.3 meters in dimensions in its stowed config and spanned across 39.4m in orbit. It is three-axis stabilized and has 48 Ku band transponder, more than double the current Ku-band capacity operated by MEASAT, which are used for the expansion of video and data services and enhances support to Asia's premium direct-to-home (DTH) and video distribution neighbourhood across Malaysia, South Asia (India), Indonesia and Australia, serving more than 18 million households. It has been designed to support a fourth market. Australian satellite operator NewSat Ltd. (now part of SpeedCast Australia Pty Limited) announced in February 2012, that an undisclosed number of Ku-band transponders will be leases and marketed as Jabiru 2. MEASAT-3a is a communications satellite which MEASAT Satellite Systems intends to operate in geosynchronous orbit at 91.5 degrees but has now be moved to 160 Degrees to serve abc and SBS channels. It was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation, based on the STAR-2 spacecraft platform.
