Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna

The assassination of Daya Pathirana took place on 15 December 1986. Daya Pathirana was the leader of the Independent Students Union of University of Colombo during 1985-1986. Pro-Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna activists (some of them were members of Inter University Students' Federation) are accused of his murder. This assassination is considered as a watershed incident in the 1987–1989 Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna insurrection.

Saman Piyasiri Fernando (also known as Keerthi Vijayabahu; died December 29, 1989), was the military wing leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna during the 1987-89 insurrection in Sri Lanka, the JVP's military wing also known as Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya (DJV). Saman Piyasiri a graduate of the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka later joined the JVP and promoted to the higher ranks of the party, appointed as the military wing leader and finally led the party after the death of the founding leader Rohana Wijeweera.

Devabandhanage Piyadasa (4 April 1946 – 15 November 1989: Sinhala: පියදාස රණසිංහ), popularly known as Piyadasa Ranasinghe, was a Sri Lankan political activist who was killed by army forces. He was the organising secretary and a member of the JVP party in the period 1970–1989. He was also known as Dibba, Sudu Mama and Dunuwila.

The 1987–1989 JVP insurrection, also known as the 1988–1989 revolt or the JVP troubles, was an armed revolt in Sri Lanka, led by the Marxist–Leninist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, against the Government of Sri Lanka. The insurrection, like the previous one in 1971, was unsuccessful. The main phase of the insurrection was a low-intensity conflict that lasted from April 1987 to December 1989. The insurgents led by the JVP resorted to subversion, assassinations, raids, and attacks on military and civilian targets while the Sri Lankan government reacted through counter-insurgency operations to suppress the revolt.

Herath Bandarage Herath (H. B. Herath) was a Sri Lankan politician. He was a member of the JVP party in the period 1983-1989.

Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Nandasena alias D. M. Ananda alias Amal Mahattaya (1954–1989) was a senior leader and a politburo member of the Jantha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) during the notorious 1987-89 insurrection. At some point he is rumored to have been in control of the JVP organisation. D.M. Ananda was captured by Sri Lankan government forces in 1989 and apparently died in captivity.

Ginnen Upan Seethala (Sinhala: ගින්නෙන් උපන් සීතල; The Fire born frozen) is a 2019 Sinhala biographical film about Sri Lankan Marxist revolutionary Rohana Wijeweera directed by Anuruddha Jayasinghe and produced by Chamathka Peiris for Cinepro Lanka International. The film stars Kamal Addaraarachchi and Sulochana Weerasinghe in lead roles along with Jagath Manuwarna and Sujeewa Priyalal. Music composed by Nadeeka Guruge. It is the 1321st Sri Lankan film in the Sinhala cinema.

The 1971 Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) insurrection (also known as the 1971 Revolt) was the first of two unsuccessful armed revolts conducted by the communist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) against the socialist United Front Government of Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) under Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. The revolt began on 5 April 1971 and lasted until June of that year. The insurgents held towns and rural areas for several weeks, until the regions were recaptured by the armed forces, following strong support from friendly nations that sent men and material. Although this first attempt to seize power was quickly crushed by force, in 1987 the JVP launched a low-intensity insurgency in the island's southern, central and western regions that lasted several years.

Udugan Yamaya (Against the Tide) (Sinhala: උඩුගං යාමය) is a 2006 Sri Lankan Sinhala drama film directed by Sudath Devapriya and produced by National Film Corporation. It stars child actor Mauli Ferdinando with Chandani Seneviratne in lead roles along with Suminda Sirisena and Rex Kodippili. Music composed by Sarath Fernando. The film was screened at The Times London Film Festival on 24 and 28 October 2006. It is the 1072nd Sri Lankan film in the Sinhala cinema.

Inter-University Students' Federation (Sinhala: අන්තර් විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයීය ශිෂ්‍ය බලමණ්ඩලය, Anthar Vishvavidyaleeya Shishya Balamandalaya) is a confederation of students' unions across Sri Lanka. Around 70 students' unions are affiliated with the confederation, accounting for more than 95% of all higher and further education unions in Sri Lanka. The IUSF is the organization that is given leadership to whole university students in Sri Lanka. It is the largest student organization in Sri Lanka to date. It represents the voice of student councils and action committees in 15 higher education institutes including all major universities and technical colleges in Sri Lanka.
