Iron mining

The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district and mountain range in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. First described in 1866, it is the chief iron ore mining district in the United States. The district is located largely in Itasca and Saint Louis counties. It has been extensively worked since 1892, and has seen a transition from high-grade direct shipping ores through gravity concentrates to the current industry exclusively producing iron ore (taconite) pellets. Production has been dominantly controlled by vertically integrated steelmakers since 1901, and therefore is dictated largely by US ironmaking capacity and demand.

The Bruce Mine Headframe is the headframe of a former underground mine in Chisholm, Minnesota, United States. It was built 1925–26 and operated until the mine closed in the early 1940s. The Bruce Mine Headframe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 for its state-level significance in the theme of engineering. It was nominated for being the last standing example of the headframes that once proliferated on the Mesabi Range. Most of the other headframes were dismantled as open-pit mining overtook underground mining as the dominant extraction method in the region.

Gogebic Taconite is an iron-ore mining company in development stage, based in Florida, with a presence in Hurley, Wisconsin. The company, owned by the larger mining organizations, Cline Resource and Development Group, is at the center of a dispute among politicians, community groups, environmental organizations, Native American tribal councils and various stakeholders because of a proposed mining project scheduled for operation in Iron and Ashland counties in northern Wisconsin.

Taconite is a variety of banded iron formation, an iron-bearing (over 15% iron) sedimentary rock, in which the iron minerals are interlayered with quartz, chert, or carbonate. The name taconyte was coined by Horace Vaughn Winchell (1865–1923) – son of Newton Horace Winchell, the Minnesota state geologist – during their pioneering investigations of the Precambrian Biwabik Iron Formation of northeastern Minnesota. He believed the sedimentary rock sequence hosting the iron-formation was correlative with the Taconic orogeny of New England, and referred to the unfamiliar and as-yet-unnamed iron-bearing rock as the 'taconic rock' or taconyte.

The Iron and Steel industry in India is among the most important industries within the country. India surpassed Japan as the second largest steel producer in January 2019. As per worldsteel, India's crude steel production in 2018 was at 106.5 million tonnes (MT), 4.9% increase from 101.5 MT in 2017, which means that India overtook Japan as the world's second largest steel production country. Japan produced 104.3 MT in year 2018, decrease of 0.3% compared to year 2017. As of 2023-34 total steel production is 144.299 MT.

The Longyear Drill Site is a historic mineral exploration site in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, United States. In 1890 the first core samples were taken there from what would become known as the Mesabi Range, one of the world's richest iron ore deposits. The exploration diamond drilling process was led by Edmund J. Longyear, who went on to drill 7,100 test pits all across the Mesabi Range. In 1976 the Iron Range Historical Society developed the site as a historic attraction with period drilling equipment. It is now managed by the city of Hoyt Lakes in partnership with the Hoyt Lakes Garden Club.

The Plummer Mine Headframe is located in Pence, Wisconsin.

Ironton Sintering Plant Complex is a group of buildings north of Crosby, Minnesota, United States, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The plant was built in 1924 by the Hanna Mining Company to sintering iron ore mined in the Cuyuna Range. The mining industry, after 1900, was seeking to exploit lower-grade iron deposits to meet the increasing demand of the iron and steel industry. To bring the ore to customers' specifications, the mines sought to "beneficiate" the ore through sintering, crushing, and washing. The sintering process was unique to the Cuyuna Range and made it possible to economically support mining.

Anson Parsons Hotaling or Houghtaling (Feb 28, 1827, New York - Feb 16, 1900, San Francisco ) was a San Francisco merchant and real estate developer.

Millie Hill bat cave (also known as Millie Mine bat cave) is an abandoned iron mine in Iron Mountain, Michigan that is now one of the largest bat breeding colonies in North America. The vertical mine shaft is blocked by a steel grate, which prevents entry by humans but allows bats to enter and exit freely. The bat cave is designated as an official Michigan Wildlife Viewing Area.
