It is the country's second-largest metropolitan area, after the Jakarta metropolitan area. Gerbangkertosusila had also been used in presidential decree to refer to larger region which include Jombang, Bojonegoro, and Tuban.

The Sapudi Islands are administered as three kecamatan (districts) of Sumenep Regency in the province of East Java. The land area is 167.38 km, and there was a population of 82,024 at the 2010 Census and 85,284 at the 2020 Census, but the official estimate for mid 2022 showed a decline to 77,153. The Sapudi dialect of the Madurese language is spoken on the islands.

    Gua Lowo is a cave which is located at Watuagung, Watulimo sub-district of Trenggalek Regency, East Java in Indonesia. Gua Lowo is an Indonesian word, which means bat's cave. There are no other fauna except bats in this cave. The cave is about 5 kilometers long, though only 859 meters of the cave is accessible. Based on statements from cave experts, Mr. Gilbert Manthovani and Dr. Robert K Kho in 1984, Gua Lowo is the longest natural cave in Southeast Asia.

    Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (Indonesian: Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru; abbreviated as TNBTS) is a national park located in East Java, Indonesia, to the east of Malang and Lumajang, to the south of Pasuruan and Probolinggo, and to the southeast of Surabaya, the capital of East Java. It is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a sand sea, the Tengger Sand Sea (Indonesian: Laut Pasir Tengger), across which is the caldera of an ancient volcano (Tengger) from which four new volcanic cones have emerged. This unique feature covers a total area of 5,250 hectares at an altitude of about 2,100 meters (6,900 ft). The massif also contains the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru (3,676 meters (12,060 ft)), four lakes and 50 rivers. It is named after the Tenggerese people. The explosion of the volcano that created the caldera, happened ca. 45.000 years ago, in an event similar to the Krakatau eruption.
