Porkkaalam (transl. Golden Age) is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Cheran. The film stars Murali, Meena and Sanghavi. It was released on 30 October 1997, Diwali, and became a huge success. The film was remade in Telugu as Manikyam (1999), in Hindi as Meri Pyaari Bahania Banegi Dulhania (2001), and in Kannada as Odahuttidavalu (2006).

Pandavar Bhoomi (transl. The Land of the Pandavas) is a 2001 Indian Tamil-language drama film, written and directed by Cheran. The film stars Arun Vijay (credited as Arun Kumar), Shamitha and Rajkiran. While Vinu Chakravarthy and Mukesh Tiwari played the antagonists, Chandrasekhar, Ranjith, Manorama and Charle played supporting roles. The film, released on 21 September 2001, won the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Tamil (Cheran), and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Second Best Film.

Vetri Kodi Kattu (transl. Raise the flag of victory) is a 2000 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Cheran. The film stars Murali, Parthiban, Meena, and Malavika, while Vadivelu, Manorama, Anandaraj, Vijayakumar, and Charle play supporting roles. It was released on 30 June 2000 and won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues, in addition to three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards including Third Best Film and Best Dialogue Writer. The film's title is based off a song from Padayappa (1999).

Autograph is a 2004 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written, produced and directed by Cheran. The film's soundtrack is composed by Bharadwaj. Cheran also plays the lead role in his film for the first time, and other cast members include Gopika, Sneha, Mallika and Kaniha.

JK Enum Nanbanin Vaazhkai (transl. Life of a friend named JK) is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Cheran, which was partially reshot and later released in Telugu as Rajadhi Raja (transl. King of Kings). It stars Sharwanand and Nithya Menen while Prakash Raj and Santhanam play supporting roles. The film featured songs by G. V. Prakash Kumar and film scored by Siddharth Vipin. After failing to have a theatrical release in late 2013, the Tamil version of the film had a direct-to-video release in March 2015, becoming the first venture in a new initiative launched by Cheran known as Cinema2Home (C2H). The Telugu version of the film had been indefinitely placed on hold, but was later released theatrically in June 2016, with the makers trying to profit from Sharwanand's popularity.

Thavamai Thavamirundhu (transl. With much penance) is a 2005 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Cheran. The film stars Rajkiran, Cheran and Saranya Ponvannan, in lead roles while, Senthil Kumar, Padmapriya and Meenal portraying supporting roles. The music was composed by the duo Sabesh–Murali with cinematography by M. S. Prabhu and editing by B. Lenin. The film released on 2 December 2005.

Bharathi Kannamma is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Cheran, starring R. Parthiban and Meena. The film marks Cheran's debut as a director and screenwriter. It was released on 15 January 1997 and emerged a success, winning three Filmfare Awards South including Best Film – Tamil. The film was remade in Kannada as Usire (2001).

Thirumanam Sila Thiruthangaludan (transl. Marriage, with few corrections), also simply known as Thirumanam (transl. Marriage), is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Cheran and produced by Premnath Chandran. The film stars Umapathy Ramaiah, Cheran, Kavya Suresh and Sukanya with an ensemble supporting cast. The music was composed by Siddharth Vipin with cinematography by Rajesh Yadav and editing by Ponnuvel Damodaran. The film released on 1 March 2019.

Pokkisham (transl. Treasure) is a 2009 Tamil language film directed by Cheran starring himself, Padmapriya, and Aryan Rajesh. The feature released to negative reviews and failed at the box office compared to Cheran's previous work, Autograph. The movie dubbed by Meena and Prasanna.

Maya Kannadi (transl. Mirror of Illusion) is a 2007 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Cheran and produced by Subbu Panchu. Cheran also plays the lead role with Navya Nair. Ilaiyaraaja scores the music, while R. Sarathkumar, Arya and Malavika make cameo appearances in the film.
