Engineers from Prague

Karl Arnstein (March 24, 1887, Prague – December 12, 1974, Bryan, Ohio) was one of the most important 20th century airship engineers and designers in Germany and the United States of America. He was born in Prague, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) to Jewish parents. He developed stress analysis methods that have been incorporated into bridges, airships and airplane materials. Before his involvement in airships he was one of the main engineers in building the Swiss Langwieser Viaduct.

Joachim Gans (other spellings: Jeochim, Jochim, Gaunz, Ganse, Gaunse) was a Bohemian mining expert, renowned for being the first Jew in North America.

Franz Anton Ritter von Gerstner (born 19 April 1796 in Prague; died 12 April 1840 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States) was a German-Bohemian civil engineer, professor and railway pioneer.

Herbert Morawetz (1915-2017) was a Czechoslovakian-American chemical engineer. He was a professor of chemistry at NYU. His work focused on polymer chemistry and macromolecules.

Michal Klusáček (born 23 October 1979) is a Czech politician and flight engineer. In 2001–2007 he studied construction of air engines at Samara State Aerospace University. In 2012–2019, he was leader of the Czech National Social Party, when he replaced Jaroslav Rovný. Due to dispute tensions in the party, he was excluded from the party in August 2019 by the new party leadership around Vladislav Svoboda.

Antonín Baudyš (9 September 1946 – 24 August 2010) was a Czech academic and politician who served as defense minister from 1993 to 1994. He was the first defense minister of the Czech Republic.

Pavel Beneš (14 June 1894 in Prague - 31 May 1956 in Prague) was a chief designer at ČKD-Praga, one of the largest engineering companies in the former Czechoslovakia and today's Czech Republic.

Josef von Zitek (4 April 1832 in Karlín – 9 August 1909 in Smíchov) was a Czech architect and engineer best known for two neo-Renaissance landmarks in Prague, the National Theater and the Rudolfinum.

Ivo M. Babuška (22 March 1926 – 12 April 2023) was a mathematician with Czech–American citizenship, noted for his studies of the finite element method and the proof of the Babuška–Lax–Milgram theorem in partial differential equations. One of the celebrated result in the finite elements is the so-called Ladyzenskaja–Babuška–Brezzi (LBB) condition (also referred to in some literature as Banach–Nečas–Babuška (BNB)), which provides sufficient conditions for a stable mixed formulation. The LBB condition has guided mathematicians and engineers to develop state-of-the-art formulations for many technologically important problems like Darcy flow, Stokes flow, incompressible Navier–Stokes, nearly incompressible elasticity.

Jaroslav Josef Polivka (20 April 1886 – 9 February 1960), Czech structural engineer who collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright between 1946 and 1959.
