    Captain Lisa Jade Head (30 November 1981 – 19 April 2011) was a British army officer. She was the first female bomb disposal officer to be killed on operations. She died on 19 April 2011 at the age of 29, having sustained serious injuries on active service in Afghanistan. At the time of her death, Head was the first female officer and the second British servicewoman to die in Afghanistan since 2001, after Sarah Bryant, and the 364th member of the British armed forces in total.

    Abdullah Laghmani (1960s –2 September 2009) was Deputy Chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Afghanistan, and a prominent ally of President Hamid Karzai. He first served as an intelligence officer for the Northern Alliance during Taliban rule. After the formation of Karzai administration in late 2001, Laghmani served as the intelligence chief of Kandahar province before moving up as deputy chief. Laghmani was killed in a Taliban suicide bomb attack in Mehtar Lam, Laghman Province.

    Sergeant Michael Christopher Lockett MC (11 June 1980 – 21 September 2009) was a British soldier, killed in action in Afghanistan aged 29. An improvised explosive device which he was investigating exploded injuring Lockett and two other soldiers. Lockett died before he reached hospital. In June 2008 Lockett was presented the Military Cross by Queen Elizabeth II, for his efforts in an attempt to recover the bodies of Pte. Johan Botha and Sgt. Craig Brelsford, as well as successfully rescuing four other injured soldiers. He is the first soldier to die on operations who has been awarded the Military Cross since World War II.

    Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Stuart Michael Thorneloe, MBE (17 October 1969 – 1 July 2009) was a British Army officer who was killed in action on 1 July 2009 near Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. As of July 2009, Thorneloe is the highest-ranking British Army officer to have been killed in action since Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones's death in 1982 during the Falklands War.

    Warrant Officer Class 2 Gary John O'Donnell, GM & Bar (21 July 1968 – 10 September 2008) was a British Army bomb disposal expert who was awarded the George Medal twice. The George Medal is the second highest decoration for "acts of great bravery" not "in the face of the enemy". His second George Medal was the first such award in 26 years and the first ever posthumous bar. O'Donnell was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Afghanistan.
