    Gabriel García Márquez ( 6 March 1927 – 17 April 2014) was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America. Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He pursued a self-directed education that resulted in leaving law school for a career in journalism. From early on he showed no inhibitions in his criticism of Colombian and foreign politics. In 1958 he married Mercedes Barcha; they had two sons, Rodrigo and Gonzalo.

    Sergio Esteban Vélez Peláez (born 1983) is a Colombian (of Spanish descent) writer, professor and journalist. He won the Premio Nacional de Periodismo Simón Bolívar 2010 (National Journalism Award Simon Bolivar)», the Premio Internacional de Periodismo José María Heredia 2010 (International Journalism Award Jose Maria Heredia 2010).) and the Premio Cipa a la Excelencia Periodística 2012 (Cipa Award). The poet Olga Elena Mattei says that Vélez represents the Andean aspect of the contemporary Colombian poetry. Vélez is a Communicator of the University of Antioquia, Colombia.

    Fernando Soto Aparicio (October 1, 1933 – May 2, 2016) was a Colombian poet, storyteller, playwright, novelist, librettist, and screenwriter. He was born in Socha, in the Department of Boyacá. Fernando Soto Aparicio spent his childhood in Santa Rosa de Viterbo. He is remembered for the novel The rebellion of the rats. After several decades as a professor at various universities in the country, in 1961 he was exalted with the prize Selecciones Lengua Española, in 1970 he received the Casa de las Américas Prize, and a year later, the prize City of Murcia. In total, he wrote about 70 literary works, among them novels, poems, books of short stories, as well as theatre plays.

    Tomás González (born Medellin, 1950) is a Colombian writer. He studied philosophy at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is best known for his debut novel In the Beginning Was the Sea (1983) which was translated into English by Pushkin Press. González lived in the United States for twenty years before returning to his native Colombia in 2002.

    Francisco de Asís León Bogislao de Greiff Haeusler (July 22, 1895 – July 11, 1976), was a Colombian poet known for his stylistic innovations and deliberately eclectic use of obscure lexicon. Best known simply as León de Greiff, he often used different pen names. The most popular were Leo le Gris and Gaspar Von Der Natch. De Greiff was one of the founders of Los Panidas, a literary and artistic group established in 1915 in the city of Medellín.

    José Luis Álvaro Alvino Fernández Madrid (February 19, 1789 – June 28, 1830) was a Neogranadine statesman, physician, scientist and writer, who was President of the interim triumvirate of the United Provinces of New Granada in 1814, and President of the United Provinces of the New Granada in 1816. After the Spanish retook New Granada, he was barred from the country and was exiled in Havana, where he continued his scientific studies and worked as a doctor. He was later pardoned and allowed to come back to Colombia, and was appointed ambassador to France and to the United Kingdom where he died in 1830.
