Mariana Bracetti Cuevas (also spelled Bracety) (1825–1903) was a patriot and leader of the Puerto Rico independence movement in the 1860s. She is attributed with having knitted the flag that was intended to be used as the national emblem of Puerto Rico in its attempt to overthrow the Spanish government on the island, and to establish the island as a sovereign republic. The attempted overthrow was the Grito de Lares, and Bracetti's creation became known as "The Flag of Lares." The flag's design was later adopted as the official flag of the municipality of Lares, Puerto Rico.

Vera Vasilyevna Zorina (Russian: Вера Васильевна Зорина; real surname - Popova; 1853 - 1903) was a Russian operetta singer (mezzo-soprano), best known as a Russian romances (or 'Gypsy art-songs') performer. She became famous after playing the part of Stesha in the popular musical Gypsy Songs in Characters by Nikolai Kulikov. Another highly popular part of hers was La Périchole in the Jacques Offenbach's operetta. Vera Zorina (an ethnic Russian) is regarded as a founder of the "Gypsyan line" in Russian operetta.

Martin Hattala (4 November 1821 in Trstená, Kingdom of Hungary (today Slovakia) – 11 December 1903 in Prague) was a Slovak pedagogue, Roman Catholic theologian and linguist. He is best known for his reform of the Štúr's Slovak language, so-called Hodža-Hattala reform, in which he introduced the etymological principle to the Slovak language.
