The galaxy is located around 940 million light-years from Earth, which means given by its apparent dimensions, it is 370,000 light-years across. It was first discovered by Stéphane Javelle on 15 February 1896 and subsequently designated as 4C 31.32 by astronomers.

It is located 315 million light-years away from the solar system and has an approximate diameter of 70,000 light-years which is less the size of the Milky Way. IC 4026 was discovered on May 11, 1896, by astronomer Hermann Kobold and is a member of the Coma Cluster. It has a surface brightness of 11.99 mag/arcsecs meaning it is a high surface brightness galaxy.

It was discovered on 7 September 1896, by astronomer Max Wolf at Heidelberg Observatory in Germany. The asteroid was named for the House of Zähringen, a medieval noble family that ruled parts of Swabia and Switzerland.
