    Richard David James (born 18 August 1971), best known by the stage name Aphex Twin, is an English musician. He is best known for his idiosyncratic work in electronic styles such as techno and ambient music in the 1990s, and has also been associated with the electronic subgenre known as intelligent dance music. In 2001, Guardian journalist Paul Lester called James "the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music".

The album contains various tracks recorded by James between 1990 and 1994. Rolling Stone described the album sound as not having much to do with modern techno music of the era, stating it closer to avant-garde and classical composers like John Cage or Philip Glass as well as being influenced by drum and bass music that was gaining popularity in the United Kingdom at the time.

The original tape was copied from one of James' DATs sometime in the 90s and was leaked onto the internet in 2011. In January 2015, James began to upload high quality versions of the tracks to SoundCloud as part of a track dump.

    Selected Ambient Works 85–92 is the debut album by Anglo-Irish electronic musician Richard D. James, released under the pseudonym of Aphex Twin. The 1992 LP, on the Belgian ambient label Apollo (an imprint of the more prominent R&S Records), was his third release. An analogue remaster was released in 2006, and a digital remaster in 2008. Selected Ambient Works 85–92 was appreciated for its minimalist and atmospheric nature and is considered by many music critics to be one of the greatest albums in ambient, IDM, and electronic music. It has since influenced several electronic artists and was followed by Selected Ambient Works Volume II. On the week ending 27 September 2014, the album entered at #30 in the UK Dance Albums Chart after the release of his 2014 album Syro.

    Universal Indicator is the group name for Rephlex Records artists, Richard D. James (as Martin Tresidder [1]) and Mike Dred (aka The Kosmik Kommando). The name is a reference to the signature acid techno sound found on all the releases. 5 projects were released, and a compilation CD was mixed by Mike Dred. All the albums are different colours used on the UI spectrum. They were released in the following order: Blue, Red, Yellow, Green. Blue and Yellow were produced by Dred while Red and Green are often attributed to by James, though never officially.
