Amharic-language writers

Haddis Alemayehu (15 October 1910 – 6 December 2003) was an Ethiopian novelist and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia. His Amharic novel Love to the Grave (Amharic: ፍቅር እስከ መቃብር; Fəqər əskä Mäqabər, 1968) is considered a classic of modern Ethiopian literature.

Mengistu Lemma (1924–1988) was an Ethiopian playwright and poet.

Mammo Wudneh (1931-2012) was a playwright, journalist and President of the Ethiopian Writers' Association.He was actively involved as a peacemaker between Ethiopia and Eritrea working on an interfaith committee chaired by Abune Paulos, the Patriarch of the Tewahedo Church.

Woizero Senedu Gebru (ሰንዱ ገብሩ) (13 January 1916 – 20 April 2009) was an Ethiopian educator, writer and politician. In 1957, she became the first Ethiopian woman elected to Parliament.

Berhanu Zerihun (1933/4 – 1987) was an Ethiopian writer noted for his clear and crisp writing style, which contrasted against the more complex writing style popular in his time.

Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin (Amharic: ፀጋዬ ገብረመድህን; 17 August 1936 – 25 February 2006) was an Ethiopian poet, playwright, and art director.

Ras Betwoded Mekonnen Endelkachew (16 February 1890 – 27 February 1963) was an Ethiopian aristocrat and Prime Minister under Emperor Haile Selassie. Mekonnen was born in Addisge, the nephew of the noted Shewan general and politician Ras Betwoded Tessema Nadew, who introduced him to Emperor Menilek II. He was a member of the alpha class of the Menelik II School in Addis Ababa when it opened in 1908.

Daniachew Worku (1936-1994) was a writer from Ethiopia. He published four novels in Amharic and one in English.

Sebhat-Leab Gebre-Egziabher (Tigrinya: ስብሐት ለአብ ገብረ እግዚአብሔር; 1936 – 20 February 2012) was an Ethiopian writer from Tigray. He is famous for pioneering the naturalist writing style in Amharic. His writing style was not constrained by the traditional Ethiopian writing style nor orthodox syntax. Despite using simple words and seemingly light prose, Sebhat's concepts are highly sophisticated and philosophical.

Sahle Sellassie Berhane Mariam (Amharic: ሳህለ ሰልላስሴ በርሃነ ማርአም ; born 1936) is an Ethiopian author who has written in three languages: Gurage, English, and Amharic. He wrote the first novel in Chaha, a Gurage dialect, which was translated into English by Wolf Leslau for publication with the title Shinega's Village. This was followed by several books in English; The Afersata (1969) is perhaps the best known of these. He has written a major work in Amharic about the war with Italy, 1935 to 1941, and has translated other works.
