American football teams in Detroit, Michigan

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.

Detroit had four early teams in the National Football League before the Detroit Lions. The Heralds played in 1920, and had played as an independent as far back as 1905. The Tigers, a continuation of the Heralds, played in 1921, folding midseason and sending their players to the Buffalo All-Americans. The Panthers competed from 1925 to 1926 and the Wolverines in 1928.

The Detroit Wheels were an American football team, a charter member of the World Football League.

The Detroit Thunder was a professional indoor football team based in Fraser, Michigan. The team was a member of the Continental Indoor Football League. The Thunder were the third indoor football team to have called the Motor City home, following two Arena Football League teams: the four-time ArenaBowl champion Detroit Drive (1988 Arena Football League season-1993) and the Detroit Fury (2001 Arena Football League season-2004 Arena Football League season). In addition, a team called the Motor City Reapers was proposed for the 2007 CIFL season, but the team folded before ever playing a single game. The Thunder were owned by Terrence and Lawrence Foster.

The Michigan Panthers were a professional American football team that played in the United States Football League in the mid-1980s.

The Motor City Reapers were to have been a professional indoor football team based in Fraser, Michigan. The team was slated to join the Great Lakes Indoor Football League as an expansion team in 2007. The Reapers were to have been the third indoor football team to be based in the Detroit metro area. The first was the Detroit Drive, an early member of the Arena Football League, considered to have been the sport's first dynasty, and the second was the AFL's Detroit Fury. The owner of the Reapers was to have been Mike Zak Sr. The Reapers were scheduled to play their home games at the Great Lakes Sports City Superior Arena in Fraser, Michigan.

The Wayne State Warriors football team is the college football team at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. The Wayne State football team played their first game in October 1918. The Wayne State Warriors have competed in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since 1999 (and previously from 1975 to 1989), and are currently a Division II member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Wayne State plays their home games at Tom Adams Field at Wayne State Stadium. All Wayne State games are broadcast on WDTK radio.

The 1928 Detroit Wolverines season was their first and only season in the league, after relocating from Cleveland in the offseason. The team went 7–2–1, finishing third in the league. Despite the strong on-field performance, the team was forced to merge into the New York Giants after the 1928 season.

The Detroit Demolition is a women's semi-professional American football team of the Women's Spring Football League based in the Detroit, Michigan area. During their most recent season, home games were played at Franklin High School in Livonia. They joined the National Women's Football Association (NWFA) in 2002 as the Detroit Danger, winning a national championship. Their only loss that year was in the regular season to the Cleveland Fusion by a score of 14–3.
