2016 in Hong Kong

The Causeway Bay Books disappearances are a series of international disappearances concerning five staff members of Causeway Bay Books, a former bookstore located in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Between October and December 2015, five staff of Causeway Bay Books went missing. At least two of them disappeared in mainland China, one in Thailand. One member was last seen in Hong Kong, and eventually revealed to be in Shenzhen, across the Chinese border, without the travel documents necessary to have crossed the border through legal channels.

Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2016 was held together with Mr Hong Kong 2016 in TVB City on 11 September 2016. Ten delegates competed for the Miss Hong Kong title.

The election for the President of the Sixth Legislative Council took place on 12 October 2016 for members of the 6th Legislative Council of Hong Kong to among themselves elect the President of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for the duration of the Council.

The 27th Miss Chinese International Pageant, Miss Chinese International Pageant 2016 was held on January 23, 2016. Miss Chinese International 2015 Mandy Chai of Sydney, Australia crowned her successor, Jennifer Coosemans of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at the end of the pageant.

The 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was held on 4 September 2016 for the 6th Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo). A total of 70 members, 35 from geographical constituencies (GCs) and 35 from functional constituencies (FCs), were returned. The election came after the rejection of the 2016/2017 constitutional reform proposals which suggested the electoral method for the 2016 Legislative Council remains unchanged.

The Amoycan Industrial Centre fire began on 21 June 2016 in a self-storage facility housed in an industrial building in Ngau Tau Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The fire was Hong Kong's longest-burning in two decades, and claimed the lives of two firemen.

The 2016 Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony, organized by CJ E&M through its music channel Mnet, took place at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. The ceremony was the seventh consecutive Mnet Asian Music Awards to be hosted outside of South Korea and the 18th ceremony in the show's history.

Civil unrest occurred in Mong Kok, Hong Kong from the night of 8 February 2016 until the following morning. This incident occurred following the government's crackdown on unlicensed street hawkers during the Chinese New Year holidays. Eventually, violent clashes broke out between police and protesters, resulting in injuries on both sides.

The Democratic Party leadership election was held on 4 December 2016 for the 30-member 12th Central Committee of the Democratic Party in Hong Kong, including chairperson and two vice-chairperson posts.

The 2016 Election Committee subsector elections were held on 11 December 2016 for 1,034 of the 1,200 members of the Election Committee (EC) which is responsible for electing the Chief Executive of Hong Kong (CE) in the 2017 election.
