On 6 April 2012, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (French acronym: MNLA) unilaterally declared Azawad independent from the Republic of Mali in the wake of a rebellion which was preceded by a string of other Tuareg rebellions. It is called the Independent State of Azawad.

The book's text is derived from Sinema's 2012 doctoral thesis, Who Must Die: The State of Exception in Rwanda's Genocide, presented to fulfill her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in justice studies from Arizona State University.
The Freiburg Declaration (Freiburger Erklärung in German) is a June 2012 letter signed by rebel priests from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Freiburg calling for change to Catholic law forbidding communion to remarried divorcees. The archbishop for Freiburg, Robert Zollitsch, expressed disapproval of practices contrary to church law and requested that priests refrain from signing the declaration, and to retract any signatures already made.
