The April sunshine put hotspots such as Los Angeles and Sydney in the shade as Brits made the most of the good weather.
The hottest place in the country was St James’s Park in central London, where it hit 24.2C (75F), making the capital warmer than Sydney (23C/73F), LA (16C/61F) and Cape Town (23C/73F).
Many headed for seaside resorts, including 60,000 who visited the south coast where temperatures were higher than the Canary Isles.
The Met Office confirmed that today could be even hotter, with 26C (79F) predicted in London and elsewhere.
And forecasters said the coming Easter weekend will be a scorcher.
Jonathan Powell, from Positive Weather Solutions, said: “It really will feel very warm over the next few days, just reward for that bitterly cold snap at the end of last year.
