He is the founder of the band Wintersun in which he performs vocals, plays guitar and keyboards. He also played bass on Wintersun's first album before hiring a full-time line-up. Before forming Wintersun, Mäenpää was best known for his time in the folk metal band Ensiferum, which he joined in 1996 after leaving his prior band named Immemorial. Wintersun was initially planned as a parallel project alongside Ensiferum, but in January, 2004 he was forced to leave Ensiferum due to clashes between their touring schedule and the studio recording time he had booked for Wintersun.

When joining Sentenced he was soon accepted by fans. He wrote very few songs for Sentenced (whose main-songwriters were Miika Tenkula and Sami Lopakka), for example the song "Aika Multaa Muistot" on the album, "The Cold White Light".

    Tomi Joutsen (born April 30, 1975) is a musician currently in the bands Sinisthra, as the vocalist/frontman, Corpse Molester Cult, as the guitarist and backing vocalist, Feelings, as the drummer and Funeral Jacket (unknown musical position), but he is most notably the vocalist for Amorphis. He was formally in the bands Käsi, as the vocalist & The Candles Burning Blue, as the drummer. In 1999, he founded Sinisthra with Markku Mäkinen under the name Evergreen. He performs both harsh and clean vocals, a contrast to the traditional heavy metal and punk rock stylish high-pitched voice of former Amorphis singer Pasi Koskinen. Tomi's voice style is very deep, similar to a gothic metal singer in the vein of Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost and Peter Steele of Type O Negative.

He also provided vocals for the first release from the band Poisonblack, which featured members from several other Finnish rock bands.

He also writes the band's music along with his bandmates, and contributes majority of the lyrics. He has also written books, hosted a reality TV show called "Äijät" ('The men') with Jone Nikula and been a columnist for newspapers. He is known not only for his desperate and dark lyrics and his extraordinary looks and attitude, but also his sense of humour, which can be seen, for example, in NO SORI!, where Hynynen is the "special editor-in-chief". Hynynen, alongside with his Kotiteollisuus bandmates Hongisto and Sinkkonen, and Antti "Hyrde" Hyyrynen of Stam1na, his brother Janne (ex-Mokoma) and Kaarle of Viikate use the magazine to make fun of tabloids, among other things.
